Subnautica 2 Survival Guide: Master the Ocean with Angel Combs & Black Boxes

Subnautica 2: Stranded, Scanned, and Slightly Overconfident

Welcome to Wet Planet: The Short Version

You wake up on a water world after the Cigarra decides to redecorate with a crash landing. The goal is simple-ish: don’t drown, don’t get eaten, and figure out how to leave this giant fish tank. The game doles out upgrades and clues so you can inch forward instead of flailing forever like a confused tuna.

Angel Combs: Nature’s Biotech (and Your First Power-Up)

Early on you’re told to track down Angel Combs — weird, flower-like sea creatures that essentially give you new abilities when you poke their center. The first one is especially handy: it lets you eat local fish without turning into a snack yourself, so your stomach and hydration stop being panicked side quests.

Some Combs are infected or have tiny offshoots you’ll need to clean. That means following tendril-like roots, identifying the infection type, and using the right tool to disinfect sprouts so you can reach the mature core. These genetic upgrades are key for survival and for accessing hotter or deeper places later on.

Black Boxes: The Breadcrumbs of the Main Story

To actually follow the main plot you’ll hunt the Cigarra crew’s black boxes. The NOA computer points you toward one, and from there you go scavenger-hunting through wrecks, bases, and caves until you find an orange buoy with an audio log inside. Pick it up, listen to the crew member’s message, and the NOA will ping you the next location — rinse and repeat.

Black box sites often hide the blueprints or parts you’ll need next, but they won’t hold your hand. Sometimes you need new tools, a vehicle, or an Angel Comb upgrade to reach them.

New Tools, Vehicles, and Crafting: Bring Your Scrap Game

Finding black boxes and scanning nearby artifacts unlocks new gadgets and the schematics for vehicles like the Renacuajo sub and its upgrades. That unlocks more places to explore, which unlocks more stuff — it’s a satisfying loop, provided you’ve been gathering materials the whole time.

Don’t forget: blueprints don’t make themselves. You’ll still be scavenging for parts, so keep an eye out for useful scrap and plants while you wander.

What About More Story Content?

Subnautica 2 is in early access, so the plot isn’t complete yet. You can reach a point where the game happily tells you you’ve hit the end of the currently-implemented story. The developer, Krafton, has said more content will come, but there’s no firm release schedule — additions like new biomes appear to be lower priority for now.

Final Notes (aka Survival Tips from Someone Who Mostly Survived)

Stay curious, scan everything, and treat Angel Combs like bizarre, helpful houseplants. Follow the black boxes for the main beats, craft what you can, and upgrade your ride when possible. And if you get stuck, remember: the ocean is big, weird, and forgiving — until it isn’t. Have fun exploring, and try not to become lunch.
