Why a meme turned into a Metroidvania? Long story short: why not?
Metroidvanias are like pizza — everyone’s making a new slice of the same thing these days. So it was only a matter of time before internet culture crashed the party. Enter This is Fine: Maximum Cope, a game that takes KC Green’s famous dog and plants it in a big, weird, backtracking platformer where anxiety is the terrain and weird little enemies are the local wildlife.
How it plays (in plain, caffeinated terms)
This is a non-linear exploration game: hop, grapple, and unlock new tricks to get into previously unreachable nooks. Expect classic Metroidvania elements — layered levels, tricky platforming, and boss encounters that gate progress until you nab the right ability. Enemies aren’t just monsters; they’re thematic manifestations of everyday worries, which is both clever and slightly on the nose.
Save spots are literal small fires with a “this is fine” vibe where you can rest, sip coffee, and act like everything’s okay for a moment. Coffee Beans are the collectible currency — spend them on perks and to refill your healing cup. If you like filling a checklist, there are also plenty of quirky collectibles scattered about.
The five worlds you’ll stumble through
The game sends you through five distinct zones, each themed around a different type of dread: Humiliation, Fear, Failure, Loss, and Regret. Each area has its own enemies and culminates in a boss fight that gives you an ability or key to push further — and to re-explore older zones with new options.
Look and feel: charming, grim, and occasionally Cuphead-y
The little dog animations are delightfully expressive, and some of the boss designs have that rough, hand-drawn intensity that reminds you of other stylish run-and-gun titles. The trailer moves at a brisk pace, which may be a little dizzying for some viewers, but the visual touches sell the concept: anxiety never looked so cute and slightly horrifying.
When and where
It’s slated to land on Nintendo Switch in March 2026. Numskull Games is handling publishing and Hero Concept is the studio building it, and they’ve also hinted at a physical Switch edition down the line if you want a boxed version for your shelf of strange purchases.
Final sip
It’s a weird mash-up that somehow makes sense: a beloved meme packaged into a moody, collectible-filled Metroidvania. Whether that’s a stroke of genius or a delightful fever dream is up to you. Do you think it looks… fine? Grab a cup and drop your hot takes in the comments.
