Intro: Faster, prettier, and slightly smug
Heads up, kart fans — Sega has confirmed that Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will get a Switch 2 upgrade. If you thought the original Switch version felt a little sluggish when multiple players jumped in, the new edition looks to fix that with higher frame rates and sharper visuals.
Performance rundown (what to expect while you’re zooming)
In docked mode the game steps up to a 2560×1440 image. If it’s just you or you and one friend sharing the screen, the game targets a smooth 60fps. Invite three pals and the split-screen drops to 30fps, but you’ll still be racing at the higher resolution.
On the go, handheld mode runs at 1920×1080. Single-player and two-player split-screen aim for 60fps, while four-player split-screen runs at 30fps — so portable play is sharper and faster than what the original Switch could manage in many multiplayer setups.
Why this matters
On the older Switch, frame rates often settled around 30fps when multiple players joined, which could make corners feel a bit… glacial. The Switch 2 edition doubles the frame rate in those common scenarios and boosts resolution, so races should feel snappier and look cleaner.
Other bits you’ll want to know
Sega’s FAQ also lists a 16GB storage requirement for the Switch 2 edition. The game supports cross-platform matchmaking on Switch 2, and if you prefer a physical copy the cartridge includes the entire base game on a 64GB card.
Release and upgrade info
The Switch 2 edition is due digitally on 4 December 2025. Existing Switch owners can grab an upgrade pack — it’s currently offered at 50% off, so now might be a good time to snag that smoother multiplayer for less.
