Dragon Quest XI S on Switch 2: Performance Modes, Visuals & the $40 Upgrade Dilemma

Dragon Quest XI S on Switch 2 — Smooth or Pretty? (and a $40 Plot Twist)

Square Enix has spilled the technical tea for the Switch 2 version of Dragon Quest XI S, so if you were waiting for numbers before deciding to re-buy a classic, here they are — with a little sting attached.

The two-mode tradeoff: speed vs. visuals

As usual, you get to pick your poison. The Performance Priority option targets a buttery 60 frames per second at 1080p, while the Image Quality Priority setting pushes resolution up to 1440p but locks the game at 30 frames per second. Pick the mode that matches your twitch reflexes or aesthetic sensibilities.

What about handheld play?

On the Switch 2’s screen, handheld mode keeps things at 1080p and 60 FPS, so portable sessions look and feel smooth. Square Enix hasn’t given a full breakdown of any other technical differences between docked and handheld play, so we’ll need to test a real unit to spot any subtle changes.

The sting: no save transfers, no upgrade discount

Here’s the part that’ll make some fans groan: your old Switch save files won’t transfer to the Switch 2 version, and there’s no discounted upgrade path. If you already own Dragon Quest XI S on the original Switch, you’ll still need to shell out another $40 for the new port.

Is it worth re-buying?

If you’ve never played this gem, it’s still one of the standout JRPGs of its era and a solid buy for newcomers. If you’ve already beaten it on the original Switch, though, this release feels like a technical polish more than a content-packed remaster — and that price tag may give veteran players pause.

Release date and quick verdict

Dragon Quest XI S for the Switch 2 arrives on September 24, 2026. If frame-rate and handheld smoothness matter to you, the Performance mode and the portable 1080p/60 FPS option are tempting. If you’re chasing sharper visuals, the 1440p/30 FPS mode exists — but remember the extra $40 and the lack of cross-save or upgrade discounts before you hit buy.
