The Ultimate Starsand Island Pet Guide: Adopt, Befriend & Care for Your Pixel Critters

Starsand Island Pet Guide

Starsand Island is basically a furry (and slightly scaly) paradise. From chill capybaras to a dramatic pink fox and a whole parade of cats and dogs, the island is buzzing with adoptable critters. To make them yours, you’ll need to feed them, hang out, and earn their trust — because even pixel pets expect manners.

All the pets you can be smitten by

There are a dozen animals you can befriend on Starsand Island. Most are cats and dogs, but there are also a couple oddballs like a capybara, a squirrel, a panda, and that stylish pink fox. The roster includes Booboo the panda, 404 the stray kitten, Nana the white kitten, two Scrappys (yes, really), Scrappy and Scrappy, Mellowhen the capybara, Meow Alum, Octa the fox, Zippy the squirrel, Bobo the dog, Crescent, and Sheriff the cat. Note: one Scrappy wanders the town and the other lives at the pet shop, so watch the fur colors.

Quick heads-up: Booboo is special. You can max out affection and play with them, but Booboo stays with their household and won’t become your adoptable roommate.

Adopting at the pet shop (aka bring cash)

The town pet store — Woof and Wow Pets — sits on the north side of Starsand Town and is open each day from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM in-game. The shop sells two adoptable animals: the puppy Scrappy and the white kitten Nana. Adopting is as simple as chatting with the register, picking the adoption option, and handing over 7,500 coins. You’ll tap Adopt, confirm, sign the adoption contract, and then you can parade your new pal back to your place.

How island animals become adoptable

Most critters roaming the island aren’t up for grabs right away. You need to raise their friendship to level 3 by interacting and feeding them across weeks. Each week you can feed a pet up to three times, so use those meals wisely — favorite foods give the biggest friendship boost. Once an animal hits friendship level 3, the game unlocks the adoption option.

Also: animals you adopt directly from the pet shop and the stray kitten will start with a level 3 friendship automatically when the adoption conditions are met.

Befriending Booboo (the bamboo-loving panda)

Booboo does things differently. Instead of normal petting-and-snacks, you must approach holding fresh bamboo shoots and feed them on request. The feeding sequence is picky: the first time Booboo asks for 15 fresh bamboo shoots; the second and third times they want 25 each; the fourth time 30; and the fifth time 35. Every time you complete one of Booboo’s requests, they reward you with a chest full of bamboo-themed recipes.

Even after you’ve completed their quests and maxed affection, Booboo won’t be adoptable — but congrats: you can pet and play with the fluffball whenever you visit.

How to rescue and adopt the stray kitten (404)

The stray kitten’s story starts during the Light Up the Night! quest. After meeting Stella and visiting the Exploration Club, you’ll learn to use a slingshot and how to open the Mystic Forest gate. Then craft a fishing rod, snag a fish by your cabin’s river, and bring it to the little homeless floof. A cutscene usually follows — give the fish to the cat, let Stella chat with you, and when she asks about adoption, say yes.

Stella will also give you a Bamboo Cat Ear Pet Bed recipe. Craft that bed and bring it to Woof and Wow Pets; talk to Stella while holding the bed to finalize the adoption of the kitten, who becomes the cat named 404.

What each pet loves to eat (favorite foods)

Pets sort food into four feelings: favorite, like, dislike, and hate. You get the most friendship points when you feed a pet its favorite. Since you can feed each pet a maximum of three times per week, favorites matter.

Mellowhen (capybara): Basic Herbivore Pet Food, Celeste Berry, Dragon Fruit.

Zippy (squirrel): Basic Herbivore Pet Food, Celeste Berry, Dragon Fruit.

Finding animals on the map without chasing tumbleweeds

If hunting for critters by wandering aimlessly isn’t your vibe, use the map. Pets are shown by icons, but town animals can be hidden under buildings or people. Open the map and hit the Residents tab to see a list of animals. Tap any name to view its info and use the Track button to set a waypoint straight to them. Bonus: you can look up animals on the map even if you haven’t met them yet — it’s a great way to learn where each one tends to hang out.

That’s the cheat-sheet you didn’t know you needed. Now go forth, feed wisely, sign those adorable adoption contracts, and try not to brag too hard about your virtual pet’s impeccable fashion sense.
