The newest Legends of Runeterra expansion ‘Guardians of the Ancient’ arrives May 5! It will introduce 42 new collectible cards, including 3 new champions.

2nd expansion of the Shurima set

Legends of Runeterra card release cycle is built around new regions. Each set introduces a new region and is split up into three expansions. As such, the Shurima set, when completed, will include three expansions: ‘Empires of the Ascended’ (released March 2021), ‘Guardians of the Ancient’ (coming May 5, 2021), and another expansion named ‘Rise of the Underwolds’ to follow in June 2021. Champions

This time, Riot decided to lay all their cards out on the table right away and showed us all the champions that are coming in the ‘Guardians of the Ancient’. In the animated short that announced the release of the expansion, we can see Zilean, Irelia, and Malphite – the champions from the regions of Shurima, Ionia, and Targon, respectively.

Once a member of Icathia’s governing council, Zilean is a prodigious elemental mage who seeks mastery over time itself. After using his powers in an attempt to save his people from the Void, he now drifts through the past, present, and future, bending and warping the flow of time around him. Zilean has traveled from Runeterra’s mysterious creation, all the way to its seemingly inevitable ending, searching tirelessly for any strand of fate that might undo his homeland’s destruction.

A massive creature of living stone, Malphite was born from the heart of the great Ixtali construct known as the Monolith. He has studied the elemental balance of Runeterra for centuries, using his tremendous strength to maintain order in a frequently chaotic world, and crush the dark things that crawl beneath it. Now, roused all too often from his slumbers, Malphite endures the fluid temperaments of mortals, in pursuit of the only cause worthy of the last of his kind.

The Noxian occupation of Ionia produced many heroes, none more unlikely than young Irelia of Navori. Trained in the ancient dances of her province, she adapted her art for war, using the graceful and carefully practised movements to levitate a host of deadly blades. After proving herself as a fighter, she was thrust into the role of resistance leader and figurehead, and to this day remains dedicated to the preservation of her homeland.
